Summary

Clinical Ethics and End of Life Care is not a specialty, it is everyone’s business. Effective training of healthcare professionals at all levels must be provided to achieve a strong foundation of knowledge and confidence in effective strategies to manage the challenges of maintaining quality of life as death approaches.

This eCourse aims at debating ethical, legal, religious and cultural aspects in End-of-Life Care, indication & prognostication, decision-making, communication, team-working, role of palliative care, limitation of life-sustaining treatments and much more.

An online support classroom has been created and includes various study resources on the topic. Participants are welcome to study them for a better in-class performance. Continuous monitoring and follow will be carried out in order to ensure that any shortcomings are avoided.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • To understand the ethical principles which should guide the care of the critically ill patient. 
  • To identify and discuss the importance of setting goals of care before initiating limitations of life sustaining treatments in the critically ill patient and to develop strategies to ensure that these goals are achieved.
  • To describe how ethical reasoning should be applied to the process of withholding or withdrawing life-sustaining treatment.
  • To explain the holistic aspects of palliative care of the critically ill patient.
  • To recognise how communication, shared decision making and ethical climate all influence the quality of end of life care for patients, their families and healthcare professionals.
  • To understand the impact that cultural diversity may have on the beliefs and values of patients, their families, and / or their legal representatives
  • To recognise how ethical principles and ethical reasoning can be applied when the prioritisation of critical care resources are required.
