Clinical Ethics and End of Life Care
Summary
Clinical Ethics and End of Life Care is not a specialty, it is everyone’s business. Effective training of healthcare professionals at all levels must be provided to achieve a strong foundation of knowledge and confidence in effective strategies to manage the challenges of maintaining quality of life as death approaches.
This eCourse aims at debating ethical, legal, religious and cultural aspects in End-of-Life Care, indication & prognostication, decision-making, communication, team-working, role of palliative care, limitation of life-sustaining treatments and much more.
An online support classroom has been created and includes various study resources on the topic. Participants are welcome to study them for a better in-class performance. Continuous monitoring and follow will be carried out in order to ensure that any shortcomings are avoided.

Intended Learning Outcomes
- To understand the ethical principles which influence the care of the critically ill patient.
- To identify the medical condition(s) and discuss the importance of setting goals of care before initiating life-sustaining treatments in the critically ill patient and to develop strategies to ensure that these goals are achieved.
- To recognise how communication, shared decision making and ethical climate all influence the quality of end-of-life care for patients, their families and healthcare professionals.
- To understand the impact that cultural diversity may have on the beliefs and values of patients, their families, and / or their legal representatives.
- To understand the importance of communication skills in end-of-life and palliative care and to be introduced to educational tools that may be used to teach and improve these communication skills.
- To explain the holistic aspects of palliative care of the critically ill patient.
- To describe how ethical reasoning should be applied to the process of withholding or withdrawing life-sustaining treatments.
- To understand how the use of guidelines on end-of-life and palliative care may improve the quality of dying and death for critically ill adults in intensive care units, minimize the adverse effects of the experience on families, support the well-being of healthcare professionals, and serve as a resource for hospital administrators and healthcare policymakers.
- To understand the challenges of implementing guidelines on end-of-life care and palliative care at the bedside.
