Acute Kidney Injury Part II: Epidemiology

ACE
Acute Kidney Injury

Summary

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is common in the ICU affecting up to 50% of critically ill patients (Joannidis et al. 2017). Over the past decades several attempts have been made to standardize the definition of AKI. In 2004 the Risk, Injury, Failure, Loss of function and End stage Kidney disease (RIFLE) criteria were published, the first consensus statement defining AKI based on serum creatinine and urine output (Bellomo et al. 2004). This was followed in 2007 by the Acute Kidney Injury Network (AKIN) (Mehta et al. 2007) and the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcome (KDIGO) criteria in 2012 (KDIGO 2012). These consensus statements made the way to investigate AKI in the critically ill worldwide using similar criteria.
