The Art Of Trauma Care
Summary
The ESICM Art of Trauma Care Course aims to provide realistic and pragmatic trauma teaching based on most recent evidence. It focuses on recognizing and managing a severely injured patient in the resuscitation room and ICU over the first 48 hours, strategies for organ failure in trauma, non-technical skills, team-work, communication, decision-making under uncertainty, use of cognitive support, SOP, checklists, stress and cognitive load management.
Endorsement: This Course is endorsed by the Neuro-Intensive Care Section, ESICM.

Intended Learning Outcomes
- Recognize and manage a severely injured patient in the resuscitation room and ICU over the first 48 hours; injuries covered (all individual organ injuries covered by at least one interactive case session)
- Initial assessment and prioritization
- Circulatory, Respiratory and Neurological priorities
- Traumatic Brain Injury
- Shock and differential diagnosis of shock in a traumatic context
- Thoracic injury
- Abdominal and pelvic injury
- Extremity injury
- Stratification of surgical repair and damage control
- War injuries
2. Strategies for organ failure in trauma
- Circulatory failure, clotting disorders and thromboembolic complications
- Neurological impairment and neurocritical care
- Respiratory failure
- Renal failure
- Metabolic failure and nutrition
- Infectious complications
- Ethical considerations, communication with next of kin
3. Non-technical skills, team-work, communication, decision-making under uncertainty, use of cognitive support, SOP, checklists, stress and cognitive load management
